Why are manhole covers round?
Manhole covers are round because a circular lid cannot accidentally fall through its own opening, unlike square or rectangular designs.
The circular design of manhole covers is a classic engineering solution to a practical safety problem. If a manhole cover were square, rectangular, or even oval, it could easily fall down the shaft if rotated diagonally and tipped. Because a circle has a constant diameter, a circular cover can never be rotated in a way that allows it to slip through its matching circular frame. This geometric property is shared by other curves of constant width, such as the Reuleaux triangle, which could theoretically also be used for this purpose. Beyond this safety feature, round covers are easier to manufacture, require less material for a given strength, and are much easier to move. A worker can roll a heavy circular cover on its edge instead of lifting it, which greatly reduces the risk of injury. Additionally, circular covers do not need to be aligned to any specific angle when being replaced, making maintenance much faster and safer.
