Useless fact
What are the white spots on your fingernails called?
The harmless white spots or lines that commonly appear on your fingernails are medically known as leukonychia.
The term leukonychia comes from the Greek words leukos, meaning white, and onyx, meaning nail. It refers to a condition where white discoloration appears on the nails. This phenomenon is most commonly classified as punctate leukonychia, which presents as small, isolated white spots. While popular folklore often attributes these white spots to a deficiency in calcium, zinc, or other vitamins in the diet, medical science has established that they are almost always the result of minor, benign trauma to the nail matrix. This matrix is the active tissue at the base of the nail where new nail cells are produced. Bumping, biting, or pinching the base of the nail can cause slight damage to these developing cells, which then grows out as a visible white spot weeks later. Because nails grow slowly, people often do not remember the minor injury that caused the mark by the time it becomes visible. In rare cases, more widespread whitening can be a sign of systemic disease, but isolated spots are entirely harmless and require no treatment.
Why this is true — The medical term for white spots or discoloration on the nails is leukonychia.
